Eligibility criteria for AHCCCS.

When are Braces Medically Necessary?

As a Medicaid program, AHCCCS covers braces when they are medically necessary. This can save you thousands of dollars if you qualify for coverage.

The question is, what makes braces medically necessary?

Sometimes braces can serve a purpose that is mainly cosmetic, such as closing a gap between teeth or improving a smile. AHCCCS does not cover cosmetic uses for braces.

Your dentist or orthodontist can determine whether braces are medically necessary for more serious oral health issues. Some mouth conditions that may satisfy the medically necessary requirement include:

  • The existence of a cleft palate
  • Problems opening the mouth or chewing and eating normally
  • Speech impediments
  • Extreme overbite, underbite, or crossbite problems
  • Protruding teeth (overjet)
  • Impacted teeth
  • Certain hereditary conditions

What is AHCCCS?

AHCCCS is a federal government Medicaid program that the state of Arizona administers. AHCCCS will pay for dental services for your children under 21 years of age and not require a copayment for children under the age of 19.

Do You Qualify for AHCCCS?

If you are an Arizona resident who is a U.S. citizen or a qualified immigrant, have a Social Security number (or have applied for one), and meet the income limits, you may be eligible to apply for AHCCCS for your family.
